Families enjoy Family Fun Night at Crest Theatre
Superior Elementary School held their third quarter family fun night, Monday at the Crest Theatre. Two movies were shown: Inside Out and Wonder, both are award winning films, which have done well at the box office.
Wonder was nominated at the “Best Intergenational Film” in 2018. It is about a 10 year-old boy who was born with a rare medical facial deformity and had 27 different surgeries in order to see, smell, speak and hear. It tells of his struggles as classmates made fun of him. Eventually he won them over and was presented a medal for his strength and courage to a thunderous applause from the crowd.
Elementary students have been reading the book Wonder by R.J. Palacio. The book tells the story of a fictional boy with facial difference and his experience in everyday life dealing with the condition. It was inspired by the author’s real-life encounter with a child who had a craniofacial disorder.
Inside Out is an animated film which follows the inner workings of a young girl as she adapts to her family’s relocation. Five personified emotions administer her thoughts and actions. The main theme of the film is the consequences and protrayal of emotions and memories. The film was the seventh-highest-grossing film in 2015.
Seventy-three children, 60 adults and all the elementary teachers attended Monday evening’s fun night.
Family Fun nights are designed to promote family engagement with the school. A total of four are planned for this school year. The second one was held in December and featured a winter carnival. It has been common for fun nights to focus on literacy and social-emotional skills.
