Last week a reader asked The Express editor if he remembered the name of a school located about four miles east of Superior. The man said he attended the third grade in that school but had forgotten the name of it.
The editor reported he thought the school was most likely Valley Home and cited a story published in the April 23, 1953, issue of this newspaper.
That story reported the Valley Home School located three miles east of Superior would reopen for the fall term after being closed for several years. Miss Heral Jean Jensen of Cadams would be the teacher. Ten pupils were expected. The school had been closed for several years and the district had been sending the pupils to Superior. Board members were Baird McFarland, Glen Colborn and Glen Ridle. McFarland’s daughter, Lynn (Wilton) Koester ,was one of the four first graders who started school that fall at Valley Home.
The school apparently was one of four school houses built in the Superior area about 100 years ago. A story printed in The Superior Express reported a $3,500 contract had been let to the Amberson Brothers to build the new Valley Home school house. Joe Myers had been awarded a $5,000 contract to build a school house for the Gard District. (Perhaps one of our readers can help identify where that was located.) The school district which served the cement plant was receiving bids for the construction of what is now known as the Portland Heights School. It was expected to cost $5,000. In addition the blueprints for the new Superior Junior High School were about completed.
The Valley Home School was located on Road 4000. Depending upon where you start counting from it was ether three or four miles east of Superior. The location is 4 miles east of the Third and Bloom intesection which the state roads department considers the center of Superior.
