Seven teams competed for the state drill team high kick title in Grand Island, Friday, at the Heartland Events Center. The Superior High School Drill team brought home the State Class C-2/D runner-up trophy.
Stephanie Corman, coach, said, “ I am proud of this group of girls. Because of an injury, we had to redo the entire performance, last Monday.”
This is Corman’s tenth year to coach the team. It is the fourth year in a row the team has brought home a trophy from the state competition.
“It is awesome,” Corman said. “Every year I raise the bar higher. I am grateful the girls trust me and work hard: four trophies in four years. Their hard work, determination and grit push them through any adversity thrown in their way.”
In 2019 the team placed third. In 2020 and 21 they won first and in 2022 and 23 they were runners-up in state high kick competition.
Members of the team are Haley Blackstone, Brooklynn Grabast, Neah McMeen, Laci Kirchhoff - seniors; Lilly Edwards, Nevaeh Wilhelms, Nadia McMeen - juniors; Halle Bargen, Faith Butler- sophomores; Kaityn Nielsen and Cora Schnakenberg - freshmen.
Several members of the drill team also are key members of the girls basketball team. Friday, after competition in Grand Island, they rushed back to Superior to play basketball against Sutton. The game was originally scheduled for Thursday, but because of a snow storm was moved to Friday.
