61 teams compete in Red Neck Miniature golf fundraiser

The 11th Red Neck Miniature Golf Tournament was held Sunday in and around Deweese. Sixty-one teams of new and familiar faces participated on a beautiful Sunday in February. Numerous others stopping by to bring donations, bid on silent auction items, etc. The day was filled with laughter, conversations amongst neighbors, friends and new acquaintances; hearing folks say that hole is impossible – then the next player aces it; all while funds were raised for St. Jude Research Hospital and, for cancer patients of Brodstone Healthcare, Superior; Morrison, Hastings and, Nebraska Cancer Specialists, Hastings.

The flag prizes were determined by a volunteer randomly calling out numbers. If your number was called, you were one of the lucky ones.

The golf winners were determined by randomly asking people to pick their favorite of blue, green, yellow or pink – which determined their place. Names were then drawn to fill in the blanks.

Championship flight: first – Paige and Terri Biltoft 182; second –Dirk Johnson and Brady Hinrichs 208; third – Sam Nejezchleb and Tara McDaneld 201; Cindy Hewitt and Jeanne Keifer 218.

First flight: first – John and Kim Story 180; second – Alex Paus and Michael George 198; third – Bob and Jean Menke 187; fourth – Mel Meyer and Jen Simpkens 205.

Second flight: first – Kyle and Diane Krotzinger 189; second – Amanda Skalka and Angie Sack 201; third – Kylie Beard and Rae Hansen 204; fourth – Austin and Cassie Stroda 208.

Third flight: first – Zach Smith and Suzie Kluver 195; second – Jason and Tara Drudik 179; third – Jenny Gilbert and Alaina Brown 201; fourth – Michelle Sorsen and Amy Augustine 207.

Poker players drew six cards while on the route; drew a poker chip to determine how many cards they had to randomly discard; cut a brand new deck and drew back to a five-card poker hand to determine the winners.

First flight: first – Terry Miller A High Straight; second Diane Krotzinger 3/Kind 8’s

Second flight: first –Suzie Kluver 3/Kind J’s; 2nd – Bev Cuba 2 Pair Q’s/J’s

The Split the Pot was won by Travis Fraser and Mel Whitlock.

Thanks to all the sponsors, golf course hole designers-hosts, kitchen chief and helpers, auctioneer and help, club house set up and take down and all of the generous participants and guests who donated their winnings back to the cause; as well as buying silent and live auction items. As the saying goes: It takes a community to raise a child – in this case, it takes a community working together to have a successful fundraiser.

Next year’s tournament will be Sunday, Feb. 18, 2024.
