Businessman helps officer make arrest in Superior

Superior Pharmacy was the unlikely scene of an arrest by Nathan Wilt, a Nuckolls County Sheriff’s Department deputy, Wednesday, Jan. 25..

Wilt was on patrol when he noticed an individual with active felony arrest warrants enter Superior Pharmacy. Wilt noted the individual had left unattended children in his vehicle. Wilt entered the pharmacy to deter the suspect from fleeing in the vehicle, putting the children at risk.

After Wilt entered the pharmacy, he approached the individual, a Hispanic male, and advised him he was under arrest. The response was a fist to Wilt’s face. The indivi suspect’s shirt and the individual; ran out of the store shirtless.

Wilt pursued him outside where he deployed his taser and fired. A taser makes a loud popping sound when it is deployed. Persons on the street mistook the sound for gunfire and scurried for shelter. Two attempts to taser the man were unsuccessful as only one of two probes entered his body.

Wilt then became entangled in a physical altercation with the individual. Levi Gunn, a Superior businessman, noticed the commotion taking place out side his store front. He rushed out and helped subdue the individual as Wilt handcuffed the wanted man. Several other people rushed to render assistance but the situation was under control.

Wilt and fellow department members transported the individual to Nelson.

The Webster County law enforcement office was contacted and asked to pick up the prisoner, a Guide Rock resident. They declined. The Adams County law enforcement officials were not as generous and he was taken to Hastings. His family has since moved to Fomoso.

He had a county court appearance Monday. He advised the court He had retained Richard Alexander, a Hastings attorney, to represent him. His next appearance is scheduled for Monday, March 6.
