The first weeks of the 2023 Nebraska legislative session are complete. The early session is shaping up to be one of the most promising we’ve had on a number of issues.
Sen. Albrecht has introduced a great piece of legislation to ban abortion after six weeks of gestation. I am proud to be a co-sponsor of this legislation. Sen. Brewer has introduced LB 77 on constitutional carry. I am also proud to have co-sponsored this bill and will fight for its passage on the floor.
Sen. Linehan has brought legislation to give parents a choice in what school is best for their child’s education.
These are key issues that I have discussed with many on the campaign trail, and I will continue to fight to get these bills over the finish line.
But we must do more. During the first week of the legislative session, I was blessed to earn the trust of my colleagues to chair the education committee. My first action as chair was to introduce LB 374, the Parents’ Bill of Rights and Academic Transparency Act. This bill will protect the role of parents, protect teachers from any adverse action if the school administration pressures or compels them to teach anti-American ideas, and lays out a process to object to any inappropriate material for minors in a school library or classroom. This legislation is critical for Nebraska parents.
I was also pleased to join my colleagues to introduce Gov. Pillen’s education finance reform proposal. We need to work towards dollar-for-dollar tax relief for taxpayers while adequately funding all students regardless of status. Our Nebraska legislature must make this a priority, and I will work as education committee chair to get this bill over the finish line.
