Nelson American Legion Post 187 news

The regular monthly meeting of the Nelson American Legion Family was held on Thursday, Jan. 12, in the Legion meeting room.

The group was saddened by the sudden death of long-time club manager, Jim Menke. Jim was the driving force in obtaining the buildings that house both the clubhouse and the meeting room and was a storehouse of knowledge about the unit’s history. Plans for the ongoing operation of the clubhouse were brought forth and several members volunteered to assist. Bill Riley agreed to oversee day to day operations on an interim basis until such time as other arrangements are made.

At the break-out sessions Legion members made plans for military services for departed members Paul Buresh and James Menke.

The auxiliary approved the needed dues increase for 2024, the payout of the 2022 Scholarship to Emma Epley, a memorial for 45 year member, Audrey Sunday, and planned to serve lunch after the Menke service. Spearheaded by Teresa Walton, they are also busy making plans for the Mardi Gras “Chubby Friday” party to be held Friday, Feb. 17.

Sons of the American Legion members are much needed and appreciated for their service during military honors and cemented their participation in the two upcoming services.

Next regular meeting will be at 7 p.m., Feb. 9. Like the Legion Facebook page to receive updates on club activities.
