Rain finally came, but more needed

While residents of this area were rejoicing Tuesday to have received much needed rain, residents to the west were dealing with a major winter storm. Both Interstate Highways 80 and 70 were closed because of the storm. West bound travelers on I-80 were being stopped at North Platte. West bound travelers on I-70 were being stopped at Oakley.

Locally, it was hoped the rain was sufficient to finally put out the grass fire that earlier swept across western Nuckolls County from near Bostwick to the Lawrence area.

According to unconfirmed reports, that fire has been smoldering beneath the windblown dust that has frequently restricted travel through the fire zone. Farmers with land in the fire zone have been hoping moisture would come before all their top soil is blown away. Dust piled in the grader ditches is reminsincent of the pictures from the 1930s.
