Candy Cane Lane reopens after brief electrical problems

Candy Cane closed

Candy Cane Lane had a great opening Friday night. As expected the park was a popular place to be with not only the light show but the Scout Cabin was open and serving hot chili, hot dogs, hot chocolate, coffee, S’Mores and other goodies. As usual the horse drawn wagon rides through the park were popular.

However, there have been some surprises and on Monday the future of this year’s display was in question.

An electrical fuse costing $12.50 each and serving Pole One had repeatedly blown. It wasn’t a problem in past years but the display was shut down for an idenfinite time as representatives of the Superior Utility Department and South Central Electric went to work trying to determine the cause of the problem.

But the future was brigher on Tuesday. Temporatry repairs were made and the word was the display could continue to run this season. It is anticipated more permaenent repairs will be made before the display opens next year.

All lights used are of the LED variety and though there are lots of lights, the power consumption is not excessive. The number of lights used this year is not much different than last year.

In addition to the electrical problem, the wagon rides had extra excitement when one of the horses stumbled. Hopefully, the horse was not seriously injured but when we talked with a Candy Cane Lane representative, they were awaiting a report on the horse. Current plans are to continue the horsedrawn wagon rides as originally scheduled.

Five candy canes were knocked over Friday night and one of the bows lost. So finding the missing bow added to Monday’s problems that had to be traced and fixed.

And the committee was keeping their fingers crossed that Tuesday’s forecasted winter storm with ice, snow and high winds did not cause additional problems.

Thankfully the storm turned out be mostly bluster. The ice and snow that had been forecast for Superior went to the north and by Tuesday afternoon, the wind was calming and the sun peeking through the clouds. Volunteers were checking the displays and preparing to open on schedule Tuesday evening.

Committee members are hopeful no additional closures will be needed this season.

Tractor drawn hayrack rides are planned for Friday evening and horsedrawn rides on Saturday. Loading is scheduled to begin at 5:30 both days. The hayracks load near the Superior Public Schools’ bus barn and return to Scout Cabin where chili, hot chocolate, S’Mores, hot dogs and hot apple cider will be waiting

Santa Claus will be at the Superior Auditorium from noon until 5 p.m. Sunday. Youngsters are encouraged to dress for photos with Santa.

The auditorium committee will also have a baked potato bar and offer opportunities for decorating cookies.
