USD 107 B.O.E hire attorney to investigate complaints
President Kenny Mizner called the regular meeting of the Board of Education for USD No. 107 to order Nov. 14. Those present were Kenny Mizner, Marc Grout (via Zoom), Brandon Hollerich, Wayne Frost, Bobi Fogo, Brenden Wirth, Justin Angleton, Rex Boley, Sam Meyers, Cassi Bozarth and Janet Higer.
It was reported the office of the state fire marshal was out to do the inspections of all the district buildings.
FM Global completed boiler inspections on all of our boilers.
Reaction Engineering from Dodge City did the water treatment inspection on the elementary boilers.
Glassman Corp., will check the back flow preventers on the boilers.
The district received a tanker load of fuel from S&K Fuels.
The Pre-K-5 teachers will go to Concordia Elementary to observe teachers teaching a phonics program called Pathways to Reading.
The elementary students met their AR goal on Oct. 25. On Oct 31, the students were able to watch a movie in their classrooms with snacks. They also got to wear PJs and bring items to make their movie experience better in the classroom.
The elementary students went to the high school to watch the Creede Repertory present Casa Alfonsa.
The teachers had the opportunity to have professional development with their math intervention curriculum DreamBox.
Parent-teacher conferences were well attended at 93 percent at the elementary.
Parents were given the opportunity to fill out a parent survey as the elementary school works on their shared vision.
The Jewell County Health Department came in to give the opportunity for students to have a flu shot.
There was an evacuation drill this month. It was a successful srill.
The principal reported on Oct. 4, Sports in Kansas provided an assembly to the Junior-Senior High School titled Think Before You Post that focused on appropriate use of social media and digital citizenship.
The Westerlies, a professional brass quartet from New York, were at Rock Hills and worked with the band and vocal students K-12 in different grade level workshops.
The school play, “Cinderella” was performed on Nov.18 and 19 in the Little Theater.
Three students attended the 18th Annual Jack Kilby STEM Day at Barton Community College.
Sophomores took the Pre-ACT.
Eight FFA members attended the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis in October, members in attendance were Paige Zadina, Troy Duskie, Lauren Whelchel, Kayle Wagner, Grace Ayers, Bella Volker, Jada Eilert, and Peyton Zadina. Overall students had a great time and connected with members from across the country.
The FFA officer team will be competing in District Ritual and Par Law.
The FFA member of the Month for October was Jada Eilert.
On Nov. 8, the art students (HS, 6th grade and 4th grade) celebrated National STEM/STEAM Day by creating Lego Sculptures and also talked about the World Famous Lego sculptors Nathan Sawaya and Ekow Nimako!
Ms. Harvey’s Healthy Informed Living students are about to finish repainting the tennis court lines and cleaning up the entire court area.
Four junior high choir and four junior high band members performed in the Northwest District KMEA concert on Nov. 5. Two high school students also were chosen by audition to perform in the high school honor Jazz Band that day. Four high school students attended the NPL vocal clinic and sang with the large group on Nov. 7 at Thunder Ridge.
The superintendent said 52 people were in attendance at Long-Range Planning session. The Long Range Planning session met again on Nov.16.
The Beloit District is starting interviews for the director of special education position.
Mr. Wirth and Mr. Hollerich have been working on reviewing all of the school districts policies.
Brenden Wirth and Mr. Boley attended KASB Convention on November 11-13.
The district is working on Year 5 KESA OVT On-Site and Accreditation reports. With State of Kansas interest rate for idol funds currently above 4 percent. The district is looking into investing part of the capital outlay funds in a 3- or 6-month CD.
The district is meeting with companies on doors and door key card system. In addition, there are meetings with companies about cameras for buildings.
The district is looking into purchasing vape detection devices.
The superintendent is ordering rock to fill the potholes in the north parking lot of the junior-senior high school and smaller rock for the holes by the tech building.
Brenden Wirth reviewed the process he, Brandon Hollerich and Superintendent Boley have been going through to review board policy. KASB went through the current policy and provided a recommended updated policy for review.
President Mizner shared a financial document with the board that had initially been provided by Mapes and Miller, previewing revenues and expenditures over five years. President Mizner is working on getting the form in a format that will make the financial statement more beneficial to the board and also to use as a tool in budgeting.
The board approved to hire Attorney Katie Schroeder for further evaluation-investigation of formal complaints.
Mr. Boley reported that McCowen-Gordon wants to visit with Campbell Johnson concerning the water mitigation plan. The board held a lengthy discussion concerning the scope and amount of project. As a result of that discussion, the consensus was for Mr. Boley to come back to the board with a bid for the junior-senior high HVAC System.
Mr. Boley discussed lighting at the bus barn, Pre-K and storage room. Three bids for lighting from White Rock Electric were approved.
Mr. Boley presented a bid for turf at the elementary school courtyard. The bid was from Athco for $71,346.90 and was approved by the board.
Mr. Boley and Mrs. Higer addressed the board regarding a possible short-term certificate of deposit investment of $1,000,000 out of the capital outlay fund. The board approved investing $1,000,000 in a 2 month CD with the State Exchange Bank.
Brendon Wirth gave a short informative report on the benefits and importance of attending the Annual KASB Conference.
The next regular meeting is scheduled for 1 p.m., Monday, Dec. 12, at in the board room of the district office.
