Airplane in distress lands at Superior

Superior first responders received an unusual call Friday evening. The air traffic controllers at the Minneapolis center asked that emergency equipment, an ambulance and fire trucks, stand by at the Superior Municipal Airport.

The cause of the call was a disabled aircraft. A solo pilot flying an instrument flight from South Dakota to Wichita, declared an emergency when the engine on his older model Mooney single engine aircraft stopped functioning. The pilot, then at an altitude of 11,000 feet, requested assistance from the Minneapolis controllers who were working his flight,

With the aid of the controllers, the pilot was able to activate the lights on the Superior runway and glide in for a safe landing. The pilot was uninjured and the plane was undamaged.

A mechanic who inspected the aircraft Monday noted the cause of the power loss as a valve which popped off. The aircraft will be repaired at Superior and flown to Wichita.
