The Lawrence-Nelson High School football team has high hopes as they head into the playoff season. The Raiders clinched their playoff spot with a 76-18 win over the Deshler Dragons at Lawrence, Friday.
Deshler stunned the Raiders with a sustained opening drive to score the first touchdown. After the realization set in that they could not overlook the team they were playing, Lawrence-Nelson settled down and dominated the outclassed Dragons.
The tough part of the season now lies ahead. The playoffs up the ante for each team and the competition is stiffer. Mistakes can be costly. The team need to play at peak proficiency to advance to the ultimate goal, playing in Lincoln for state championship. The goal is clear and attainable. Just make no mistakes.
Krayton Kucera completed seven of his nine passes for 194 yard. Two of the passes were good for touchdowns.
Bayln Bargen reeled in two passes for 67 yards and a touchdown. He also scored a two-point conversion. Tyson Kotinek nabbed two receptions for 60 yards and a touchdown. Erik Wheeland snagged two passes for 21 yards and a touchdown. He added a two-point conversion. Toby Kotinek landed one pass for 46 yards..
Toby Kotinek was the workhorse of the ground game. He amassed 223 yards on 16 carries. He scored three touchdowns and a two-point conversion. Kucera covered 139 yards with his nine carries. He recorded four touchdowns and four two-point conversions. Connor Janda carried the ball twice for 43 yards, a touchdown and a two-point conversion. Cody Funk netted 20 yards and a touchdown. Devyn Zikmund picked up five yards with his single carry. Carter Griffis legged his way to 16 yards with his sole carry. Thomas Church totaled 1 yard on two carries.
Kucera recorded seven solo tackles and three assisted tackles. Janda, Nolan Ostdiek, Zikmund and Bargen landed four solo tackles and an assisted tackle. Toby Kotinek posted three solo tackles and an assisted tackle.and Funk each nailed down six solo tackles and an assistsed tackle. Griffis and Al Koehler each recorded three solo tackles. Cody Funk, Rocky Miller and Wheeland registered two solo tackles and a solo tackle apiece. Clay Williams posted two solo tackles. Keaton Mazour joined in with a solo tackle and two assisted tackles. Nathan Stokes had a solo tackle. Wyatt Hajny had three assisted tackles. Roy Davidson and Keaton Mazour took care of two assisted tackles.
The Raiders open their drive to the state championship today (Thursday), at Lawrence, when they joust with the Lourdes Central Catholic Knights. (4-4). Kickoff is set for 7. p.m.
