Elmer Rempe surprised by visitors bringing gift
On Saturday, Sept. 17, Elmer and Maxine Rempe had a big surprise. They were expecting their daughter, Jeannie Darling from Arizona, and their son, Jerry, and their families, but more family kept arriving. Theresa and Tom Kulek and Jan and Ron Williams were also in attendance. Elmer and Maxine's house was full so the men sat in the kitchen and the women in the living room to visit. The Rempes thought everyone had come to see their daughter from Arizona.
Soon everyone was called into the kitchen where Elmer was presented a Quilt of Valor that was made by a family member and machine quilted at Quilted Calico Cottage.
The quilt has 192 pieces. In the center is the army insignia. The top pieced layer of the quilt and its many colors, shapes and fabric represents the communities and people that make up the United States. The batting in the center represents the hope the quilt will bring comfort, peace and healing to Elmer. The backing of the quilt represents the strength of Elmer and the support of the family, community and nation for him. The binding and stitches which tie the layers together represent love, gratitude and sometimes tears of the maker.
After the presentation, their daughter-in-law, Brenda Rempe, and daughters served cake and refreshments.
Elmer is a United States Army veteran who served in the states and Germany.
