Norman D. Hoard, 87, of Courtland, Kan. was born Aug. 21, 1935, to Charles and J. Marie (Mears) Hoard in Harvey- ville, Kan. He died at his home, Friday, Sept. 2, 2022.
Christmas of the same year, his family moved to a farm near Randall and Jewell. Norman attended Randall Elementary schools until seventh grade. He then attended Formoso schools until his graduation in 1953. On May 15, 1954, he married Doris J. Dunstan. To this union were born three boys, Kevan, Kris and Scott.
In August of 1954, Norman and Doris purchased the Standard Oil filling station on the west edge of Courtland. Through the years, Norman, Doris and their sons worked together to make the business a success. Although he sold the business to his youngest son, Scott in 1999, he never really retired. You could find him there every day drinking coffee, reading newspapers to keep up on the latest sport statistics, sweeping and greeting his longtime customers until his passing.
Norman found time to do some custom harvesting in his early years of farming. He enjoyed caring for feeder calves and maintaining his farm west of Courtland. No matter the season he would find something to do at the farm, it was his peaceful place. He enjoyed coon hunting and bird hunting with his sons and took great pride in training his coon hounds which he won several competitions with. He enjoyed getting children involved in outdoor sports and served as a hunter education instructor for seven years.
Norman played a huge role in the lives of many children throughout his life. From coaching baseball for almost 20 years, carrying candy on the delivery truck, or handing out suckers at the station, children were the joy of his life. He lit up when they walked in the door and always took the time to make each one feel special and to help them however, he could.
He was a member of the Courtland Covenant Church, served on the Courtland Community Pride Club, the Caldwell Cemetery Board, and the Courtland Rural Water District No. 1 Board. He was a driving force behind the Formoso Alumni W. J. Baird Scholarship at Cloud County Community College.
Proceeding him in death were his wife, Doris (Dunstan) Hoard; parents, Charles and Josie Marie Hoard; brothers, Richard, Milton, and Dale.
He is survived by his three sons: Kevan (Lori) Hoard of Minneapolis, Kan., Kris (Juli) Hoard of Concordia, Kan., Scott (Brenda) Hoard of Webber; five grandchildren: Bryan of Wichita, Melanie of Salina, Emily of Concordia, Madeline of Hays, and Noah of Webber; seven step-grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
His funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 9, from the Courtland Covenant Church in Courtland, officiated by Pastor Kathy Aeillo. Interment will be at the Caldwell Cemetery.
