Traffic on Highway 36 next week will remind long-term Jewell County residents what the highway was like before the construction of the interstate highway system diverted travellers away from North Central Kansas. The highway linked Chicago and Denver and was once one of the main transcontinental highways. It is still an important route but the traffic has declined, even though the road, itself, is much improved.
Starting Thursday of next week it will come alive with shoppers participating in the annual Highway 36 Treasure Hunt. Vendors will be brining their wares from other parts of the state and garage sales will be set up along the highway, in towns located on the highway and even towns which are just a ways off the highway.
Today’s issue of this newspaper has advertisements which advise local shoppers of local sales and we expect to have more ads in the next issue.
When placing their ads in this newspaper, sale sponsors will receive a small sign they can place in their yard to help attract shoppers’ attention. Extra copies of the next issue will be available on news stands so travelers may check out the local advertisements.
