SHS volleyball opens season with a win

The Superior High School volleyball team opened their 2022 season with a three-set sweep of Thayer Central at the high school gymnasium Thursday. The match marked the debut of Jessica Diehl as head coach. Superior hosted Fillmore Central, Tuesday, for the Parents Night Match. Results were unavailable at press time.

Superior was never seriously challenged in their three set, 25-14, 25-20 and 25-20 sweep.

Teegan Duncan and Madison Heusinkvelt slammed down 12 kills each for Superior. Halle Bargen accounted for eight kills. Lilly Edwards rang up four kills. Brooklynn Grabast added three kills. Ella Gardner mashed two kills while Atlee Kobza had one kill.

Heusinkvelt scored with two aces. Duncan and Kobza had an ace apiece.

Heusinkvelt was good for two blocks.

Kobza hit the deck for 19 digs. Duncan scooped up 14 digs. Bargen posted 10 digs. Gardner came up with four digs. Heusinkvelt finished the match with three digs.

Superior travels to Nelson today (Thursday) for a match with their intra-county rivals, the Lawrence-Nelson Raiders. Superior hosts a triangular match with Doniphan-Trumbull and Kenesaw Tuesday.
