How should I pray about my cancer as a Christian?
Presenting biblical answers to tough questions
Q: How should I pray about my cancer as a Christian?
A: Let’s start by asking what we want out of our prayer. Is there a specific outcome to your situation that you want (i.e. healing from cancer)? Are we seeking inner peace and wellbeing? Or do we simply want God to show up in our lives? There is no right or wrong answer here, the specific desire will simply determine the approach we take in our prayer. Take a moment to clearly determine your desire.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting something specific and humbly bringing a request to God. Christians have the right to ask our Heavenly Father for things, even things not directly promised by Scripture (Hebrews 4:16; 1 Peter 5:7). If that’s what you want to do, then simply bow your head and ask God for what you want. Think of it like a teenager asking to borrow his parent’s car: you can ask, but your loving Father has the final say and He will do what is best for everyone in the situation.
If you are a Christian and you’re lacking peace and rest, then it’s important to seek that resolution and rest through prayer. Ask yourself what you are anxious about (Philippians 4:6), cast that care upon God (1 Peter 5:6-7), trusting Him to resolve that situation by His gracious power (Romans 15:13), and the peace of God will return (Philippians 4:7).
Whatever the details of your unique situation, we know from Scripture that God graciously works in the life of all those who are called by His name (Psalm 27:13; Romans 8:28). Bringing requests before God’s throne of Grace (Hebrews 4:16) is a powerful tool and a wonderous privilege. Ask in faith (James 1:6), ask on the authority of Christ’s Name (John 14:13-14; 1 John 5:14-15), commit yourself to the Lord (Psalm 27:4-5) and He will carry out His work!
