The thermometer was reading 97 degrees when The couples league teed off Friday evening in Nelson, but with the shade and nice breeze it was tolerable out on the Elk Creek Country Club golf course. Or, were the players just getting used to the heat?
The play format made a rather tough round for everyone. Everyone teed off every time and then played alternating shots. The scores ranged from a 41 to a 63. Royce and Brenda Schott had an especially hard time on the par 5 No. 4, and had to take a 16 to go along with their high gross score of 63. Ken and Jan Rempe had a low net score of 38. Ken also had the longest putt on No. 5 at 83” and chipped onto No. 1 within 59” of the hole. And little Miss Lily Wyatt found the alligator on No. 3 this week.
With only two weeks of competition left, the standings didn’t change much nor did the handicaps.
After 10 weeks of competition, and a possible 20 points each, moving up to first place with 15 1/2 points, were Cody and Crystal Wyatt.
Second place with 15 points: Craig German and Cindy Hewitt.
Third place with 14 1/2 points: Richard and Verlene Watson.
Fourth place with 12 1/2 points: Jerry Bargen and Sally Uhrmacher.
Fifth place with 12 points: Joe Harwell and Jenny Simmons.
Sixth place with 11 1/2 points: Ken and Jan Rempe.
Seventh place with 10 points: Jim and Mary Farmer.
Eighth place with 8 points: Chuck and DeAnna Tuttle.
Ninth place with 7 1/2 points: Coke and Cindy Troudt.
Tied for tenth place with 6 1/2 points: Rod and Sue Burge and Hunter Holland and Emily Wulf.
Twelfth place with 6 points: Richard P. and Heather Watson.
Tied for last place with 5 points are Royce and Brenda Schott and Dorrel Lipker and Carla Jeardoe.
Afterwards the group had grilled burgers and the extra sides that were brought in.
This week will be the ‘3 club night.’ Golfers can use only three clubs of their choice.
