The two hottest days of the year are the Nuckolls County Horse Show and Oregon Trail Day. Saturday was no different, yet hundreds of people turned out to take the tour in Oak and enjoy a day of history. More than 200 carloads braved the heat and the dust to see the Oregon Trail Re-Enactments.
I was so happy that our youngest, Nicholas, could join us this year. He said it was fun and enjoyed it but would have enjoyed it more if it had been 70 degrees instead of a thousand! The daytime Emmy goes to Nicky! LOL! After the tour, we sat in the park, visited with family, enjoyed a snowcone and some music. Unfortunately, we didn’t make it to the BBQ because we came home to the air conditioning and passed out on the couch!
We toured the museum, and I enjoyed finding all the photos of my grandparents and great-aunt. They have put a lot of work into the museum this summer, but my favorite addition was the library room. The Kings Daughters Library in Oak was one of my favorite places as a child. I was happy to see the library had been saved, I almost cried. I remember one Oregon Trail Day, they had a teepee set up outside the library, and my Aunt Ruby and Grandma taught us about the Indians and how they used every part of the buffalo. Nothing went to waste.
It was nice to take a walk down memory lane and share that with George and Nicholas. George, Robert, and Jacob have been with me for the event once or twice. It’s the same thing, a different year for us, so it was fun to see it through Nicky’s eyes this time. X’s & O’s.
