SHS Wildcat football outlook
The weather may not have an autumnal feel but there is football in the air. The 2022 edition of the Superior Wildcats opened practice Monday at the fiIeld at the Wildcat Community Track. Hotter than normal days have moved some practices from the evening to morning hours.
There is one big change for Superior this season. They will no longer compete in the 11-man C-2 division. They have stepped down to 8-man D-1 play. The lack of players and concern for their safety prompted the move. The downside is Superior is ineligible for a post-season playoff berth.
The team has 23 players out for practice according to Paul Heusinkvelt, head coach. He is entering his third year at Superior and has a 7-9 record. His overall record is 60-44.
Heusinkvelt is looking to rely on the running game while retaining the passing option when the opportunity arises.
The offense will be run by Aiden Humphries who returns to the team with another year of quarterbacking experience under his belt.
He looks to these returning starters to form the core of the team. The team returns Henry Griljava, Seth Griljava, Luke Jameson, Tate Streit and Rieder Vier on the offensive and defensive lines.
Aaron Allgood returns at tight end. Cristian Avalos will handle the kicking duties. He adds a scoring threat with his accuracy as a field goal kicker.
Jacob Meyer, Tyler Everhart and James Love fill out the running back slots.
Assisting Heusinkvelt with coaching duties are Seth Going, Derek Clark, Ryan Renz, Andrew Diehl and Tryg Vyzourek.
The season highlight will be Friday, Aug. 26 when the wWldcats travel to Lawrence- to take on the Lawrence-Nelson Raiders for county bragging rights.
