Verleen M. Gharring, 100, of Sheridan, Mich., died Thursday, June 30, 2022, at the Laurels of Carson in Carson City, Mich. Originally from Nelson, Neb., Verleen and her late husband, Ivan, moved to the Sheridan area in the late 90s. Verleen taught in a one room schoolhouse for two years teaching first through eighth grades and then worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture in the agricultural stabilization conservation service division. In 1941 Verleen married Ivan Gharring. They were married for 78 years, until his death in 2020. Verleen was a member of the Eastern Star for more than 60 years and served as worthy matron. A great hostess, Verleen was always entertaining and a great cook. Everyone was amazed and impressed with what she could make with a paint brush, glue stick and some glitter. Verleen never sat down without some sort of project in her hand. She enjoyed making things for friends and family. She enjoyed decorating for the holidays and was always ready for everyone to come over. Verleen's family would like to thank the staff at Laurels of Carson for the wonderful care they provided to her these past few years.
Verleen is survived by her daughter, DeeAnn (Bill) Piper of Sheridan; grandsons, Chad (Martha) Piper of Lansing; Dr. Travis (Dr. Michelle) Piper of North Muskegon; great-grandchildren, Allie (Nate) Fodrill, Tess Piper, Rem Piper, Lindsey Piper, and Eliza Piper; sister, Shirley Whartman of Kimball, Neb .; and several nieces and nephews.
Verleen was preceded in death by her parents, Con and Elma (VanDyke) Whiteley; husband, Ivan Gharring; son, Ladd Gharring; sister, Floy Jensen; and granddaughter, Nicole Rene Piper. Verleen's life is being celebrated on Friday, July 29, 2022, at the Simpson Family Funeral Home in Sheridan, Mich. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m., with a memorial service beginning at 2 p.m., with Pastor Bob Braman officiating.
