COVID-19 roaring back stronger

COVID-19 is proving to a stubborn character to deal with. When it was first reported, many thought when summer came it would, like the more common flu, go away. That hasn’t been the case. In fact the Omaha World-Herald reported on Tuesday that the full-on summer season of 2022 is providing no relief from COVID-19 with cases and hospitalizations in Nebraska on the upswing.

Nebraska reported 3,535 new virus cases for the week ending Friday, up from 3.474 the week before and 2,752 the previous week.

Hospitalizations were up 11 percent. The 186 hospitalized on Friday was the highest number since early March.

Nebraska cases have been rising steadily since April. Currently the number of reported cases exceeds the peak numbers for the summers of 2020 and 2021.

Colorado currently has the nation’s highest per-capita rate. Nebraska ranks 31st in the nation.

Nebraska’s 28 percent increase in cases over the past two weeks is the sixth-highest in the nation. North Dakota is second, Kansas fifth and South Dakota tenth.

With COVID increasing, more local residents are again wearing masks when in public.

The New York Times COVID tracker reported on Tuesday the number of cases reported in Nuckolls County was up 33 percent the prior 14-day period. A total of 998 cases had been reported along with 13 deaths since the virus arrived in the county.
