July 4th activities scheduled

The 40th annual Firekracker Run will be held in person this year on Monday, July 4, but precautions are still be taken because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

At the height of the pandemic, the race was run virtually with particpants reporting their results via the internet. And for that race, a special T-shirt was designed and made reporting COVID won the race.

A registration form for this year’s race is printed in this issue of The Express. Advance registrations are encouraged.

There were 347 participants in 2021 and this year the organizers are planning for even more. Because of COVID, participants are asked to pre-register.

As in the past, this newspaper’s screenprinting department has printed a commemorative T-Shirt that will be provided to the participants.

The sponsors were responsible for the design which was done by a Superior High School art student.

Race organizers expect about 400 people to register. The 10K runners will leave from near the City Park Bandshell at 7:45 to be followed at 8 a.m. by the one mile predict, one mile kids’ run and the two-mile run. Packet pickup and late registration opens at 6:45.

The race features a firecracker start. When the firecrackers explode, the racers dash west on Sixth Street and follow a marked route that was designed to take them by many of the historically significant places in Superior.

Maps for all races will be posted in the park so the runners can familiarize themselves with the race routes before departure.

The Superior PEO Chapter’s breakfast stand will open before the start of the race and remain open until after the conclusion. A variety of foods will be available including homemade cinamin rolls.

At 11 o’clock the Superior FFA Chapter will sponsor Water Wars on the field east of the Superior Elementary School. Registration is now open for teams of any age. A team must have at least four players and not more than eight. All supplies will be furnished.

At dusk, members of the Superior Volunteer Fire Department will present a free fireworks show at Brodstone Memorial Field.

The Nuckolls County Historical Society Museum located in City Park will be open from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday but closed on Sunday and Monday.
