Superior track teams shine at state: girls in third, boys eighth

The Superior High School boys and girls track teams put on a show for their fans at the state track and field meet at Harry A. Burke High School, Omaha, Friday and Saturday.

The Wildcats girls, thanks to 36 points accumulated by junior Ella Gardner, finished in third place, with 49 points, in the field of 49 teams which recorded at least one point.The boys took home eighth place, with 23 points, in the 42 team point field.

Ella Gardner had an outstanding showing at the state meet in both her track and field events. Gardner picked up second place in the 100 meter dash with her time of 12.57 seconds. She earned the second place points in the 200 meter dash with her time of 28.09 seconds. Gardner was just getting started. She picked up first place in the long jump with her 18'.75" effort. She completed her journey with a first place finish in the triple jump when she covered 37'3.25".

Shayla Meyer picked up third place points in the discus with her throw of 136'8". She was in seventh place in the shot put with her toss of 37'3.75".

Atlee Kobza finished out of the points in the discus with her throw of 106'8".

Sadie Rempel grabbed third place in the pole vault with her bar clearing height of 10'6".

Laci Kirchhoff did not record an official height in the high jump.

Dane Miller locked down two third place finishes for Superior. He ran a 14.88 second 110 meter hurdles race. His time was 40.58 seconds for the 300 meter hurdles.

Gavin Ekstein turned in a time of 54.09 seconds in a preliminary heat of the 400 meter dash. He did not advance to the final heat.

The 4 x 100 meter relay team of Matt Colgrove, Ekstein, Aiden Humphries and Miller finished in seventh place with their time of 45.21 seconds.

Seth Schnakenberg held down third place in the discus with his throw of 156'10". He finished in sixth place in the shot put with his toss of 52'7.75".

Payton Christiancy finished out of the points in the discus with his throw of 134'9".

The teams had their largest delegation in recent years. For seniors Meyer, Miller, Colgrove, Schnakenberg, Ekstein and Christiancy, it was their final appearance on the big stage.
