Something new is coming to Jewell this Memorial Weekend – the Jewell Farmer's Market. On Saturday there will be a Grand Opening Celebration for the market. The ribbon cutting will be at 8:45 a.m., Saturday, in front of the arch at Jewell's Maag Park. Everyone is invited!
The market, "a new, healthy venture" according to Jewell resident, David Searles, is scheduled to be open from 9 a.m. to 12 noon each Saturday. According to Matt Homelwig, "market season" will be from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend. The location will always be Maag Park in Jewell.
Under the auspices of Jewell's Chamber of Commerce, the market is organized by a committee consisting of Chairman Scott Young, Meagan Young, Jami Underwood, Steve Robbins, LeRoy Bourbon, Matt and Beth McKain Homelwig.
According to Scott Young, the market will be "run in accordance with State guidelines." This means sales tax certificates and all applicable licenses will be required of the vendors. How many vendors there will be is not known and will likely vary from week to week.
Another point the committee emphasizes is the "major role" the vendors must have in the growing, making, raising or producing of their product. These will not be items purchased for resale. The committee and the Jewell Chamber of Commerce are excited about this new direction for Jewell.
