This Arbor Day, Friday, April 29, Formoso celebrates it's 37th consecutive year of being a part of the Tree City USA program. What does that mean you ask? Well, it means Formoso is active in one of the oldest programs from the Arbor Day Foundation. Started in 1976, The Arbor Day Foundation set out a vision for greener communities and a way to encourage urban communities to care for and plant more trees.
To be a member of the Tree City USA program you have to maintain four simple things: Have a Tree board or committee in your town, have a community tree ordinance, spend at least $2 per capita on urban forestry, and have an annual Arbor Day celebration! Formoso has consistently maintained these requirements for 37 years! Formoso residents are proud of the beautiful ornamental trees that add wonderful color to Main Street in the spring and thankful for the many memorial trees that are planted in the city park as well.
Did you know that neighborhoods with trees are 7 to 9 degrees cooler than neighborhoods without trees? Did you know that trees reduce energy costs up to 25 percent by providing shade and protecting buildings from the wind? And did you know that property values are higher for homes that have trees around them? Just a few benefits that trees have on our communities!
This Arbor Day - take a moment to appreciate the trees in your area!
