Council delays walking trail painting project

The Sixth Street walking trail connecting Superior’s two parks may be entering its last summer season.

The trail, painted on the south side of Sixth Street in what had been vehicle parking, has not been used as much as originally expected. Monday evening, members of the Superior Council delayed repainting the trail pending the outcome of a proposal to improve the sidewalk along the south side of Eighth Street between Park and Bloom streets.

Previous public meetings have shown more support for the Eighth Street route which provides access to the parks and the public schools.

The council did approve a proposal to paint downtown parking stalls and school crosswalks.

Andrew Brittenham, city utility manager, said it appeared the current wastewater treatment project would meet the May 1 completion deadline.

The council approved the engineer’s plans for a 24-foot wide street and eight-inch sewer main extension to serve the proposed Montana Meadows housing development.

Also approved was the addition of a collection system to the sewer lift station which serves the Superior schools and housing development west of Park Street. The lift station, one of three in the city, has been in use for about 60 years. The station’s pumps are scheduled to be replaced in the next fiscal year. It is expected the collection system will reduce the load on the pumps. The addition will cost about $6,125.00.

A request to fund the painting of vacant store front windows prior to the Vestey Festival was tabled. Before contracting to have the windows painted, Council Member Sandra Foote suggested asking if the high school art class would be interested. It will cost about $1,200 to hire a professional artist and the window treatment would last about six months. The designs would be in keeping with the community Victorian theme but not necessarily in keeping with this year’s festival circus theme,

Acting on a citizen request, Councilman Rick Disney was asked to check on the possible renting of dumpsters for a city-wide clean-up project prior to the Vestey Festival. After learning of options and costs, the council may reconsider the dumpster request.

A proposal from Brodstone Healthcare to again sponsor the Race to Remember as part of the Vestey festival was approved. The race will be run on the Saturday morning before Memorial Day. It will follow the same course as in previous years and will include divisions for both walkers and runners. Participants will depart Fourth and Central at 8 a.m. and follow routes to the west and north.
