George Allen Coon, 92, of Overland Park, Kan., died Feb. 26, in Kansas City, Mo.
George was born on May 10, 1929, to Dorothy M. Richards and John H. Coon in Red Cloud. His mother, Dorothy M. Richards, died after givingbirth to George. He was raised by his grandparents and then eventually his father and step-mother, Alyce Coon.
After George graduated from Cowles High School in 1949, he worked as a farm hand on the family farm. In 1951, he joined the Navy. He was a telegraph typewriter operator on the U.S.S.
Norton Sound. He was in the Navy for four years followed by another four years in the Navy Reserve.
In Oct, 1956, he was united in marriage to Sharon Fattig, Cambridge, Neb. To this union a daughter was born, Darla K. Coon. The marriage ended in 1959.
He went on to study tractor mechanics at Milford Technical School. Afterwards he moved to Superior and began working for Christianson & Son as a diesel tractor mechanic. He continued to work in the tractor industry until his retirement in 1984.
He married Sharon Henderson-Shuck Oct, 1974. They stayed in Superior until 1984 when they then moved to Franklin. George worked at the local thrift store and helped with food delivery to those who were homebound.
In January, 1999, his wife, Sharon, died. He stayed in Franklin until 2011 when he then moved to Overland Park to be closer to family.
He is survived by his brother, John Coon; his daughter, Darla; step-children Dianne Johnson, Brenda Hoyer, Kirk Shuck and Gary Shuck; 15 grandchildren and 12 1⁄2 great-grandchildren.
His funeral was March 5 at the Williams Funeral Home in Red Cloud. Interment with military honors was at the Red Cloud Cemetery.
