The Superior High School wrestling team competed at the state tournament held at Omaha's CHI health Center Friday and Saturday.
Superior finished in 23rd place, with 24 points in the 53 team field.
The Wildcats qualified three wrestlers for the match: Hayden Neeman, 126 pounds, Anders Webber, 220 pounds and Payton Christiancy, 285 pounds.
Neeman was a returning medalist from last year's event where he placed second in the 106 pound weight bracket. He qualified in the 126 pound weight bracket for this years match. He lost his first round match and was relegated to the consolation rounds. He won his first two matches in the consolation round. He was eliminated from medal contention when he fell to Keaghon Chini, Conestoga High School, in the third round. Chini would go on to take third place. Neeman earned two team points for Superior.
Anders Webber never took to the mats in the 220 pound weight bracket as a medical condition led him to forfeit his scheduled opening round match.
Payton Christiancy suffered a heartbreaking loss in the final round to take second place. He won his first and second round matches with a fall. In his semi-final match, his opponent had not lost a match throughout regular season, district and state matches. Christiancy put an end to that streak with his win by decision. Christiancy was unable to sustain his winning streak when he was defeated by a fall. He earned 22 team points for Superior Christiancy and Webber competed in their final event for Superior as they are both seniors. Christiancy set a Superior High School record for most career wins.
