The Superior high school girls basketball team took the hard road to gain a place in the district finals. They won their opening round sub-district C-2-6 game against Thayer Central, 41-31, at Sutton last Tuesday. They faced off against Sutton Thursday in the sub-district final game at Sutton. At stake was a trip to the district finals and a favorable seeding. The Sutton Fillies held the Wildcats at bay for a 36-28 win. All was not lost for the Wildcats as their wild card point standing gained them a berth at the district finals. They will play the number four seed Crofton at Columbus Friday. Superior is seeded 13. The Wildcats need to win this game to return to the state tournament.
Superior held a 17-14 lead at the end of the second quarter of the game against Thayer Central. When they returned to the court for the third quarter, the Wildcats held Thayer Central scoreless for the next nine minutes while scoring 13 points to take a 30-14 lead into the fourth quarter. Thayer Central outscored Superior 17-9 in the fourth quarter but it was to no avail as Superior won 41-31.
Sutton had handed Superior a defeat in the season opener for both teams. Sutton never trailed in the contest. Superior was unable to mount a consistent offense.
Teegan Duncan and Shayla Meyer led the Superior offense against Thayer Central with 12 points each. Ella Gardner tallied nine points for the game. Sadie Cornell finished the game with eight points. Cornell went up the boards for nine rebounds. Meyer grabbed seven rebounds. Gardner latched onto four rebounds. Cornell and Duncan nabbed three rebounds apiece. Neah McMeen had a rebound.
Laci Kirchhoff and Meyer netted nine points apiece against Sutton. Gradner put through seven points. Cornel accounted for three points. Meyer crashed the boards for 20 rebounds. Gardner and Kirchhoff each landed two rebounds. Halle Bargen had a rebound.
