4th Annual Bushy Nutz Squirrel Hunt

The fourth annual Bushy Nutz Squirrel Hunt was held at the Nuckolls County Fairgrounds on Jan. 22. Teams of two registered for the event the day before, with a bag limit of 5 squirrels per team. The squirrels were weighed and measured, and the top five were awarded prizes. There was also a Nut & Chatter prize awarded for the largest male. This year 52 teams registered.

Registration took place at D&D's on Friday. Saturday began the hunt, and squirrels were turned in no later than 5 p.m. at the fairgrounds. Raffles and door prizes were awarded, along with a split the pot raffle. This year the group added a raffle for the youngsters. This year's proceeds will go to the Lawrence Volunteer Fire Department, and money will be saved for a scholarship to be given next year.

After turning in the day's hunt, participants enjoyed a free-will donation dinner of Rocky Mountain oysters donated by Curtis Schiermeyer. The Nelson Golf Course hosted a cash bar.

Logan Schnitker began hosting this event after attending a squirrel hunt in Geneva. It was so much fun he couldn't help but start one in Nelson. It brings business into the community during a slow time of the year. This year the event was hosted by Decker Brown. The people behind the hunt are Logan and Kady Schnitker, Andy Sole, Leslie Drudik, Joel and Ashley DeLeon, Brett Peterson, Darren and Dawn Myers, Michael Porter, Jen Skrdla, Mark Porter, John Schutte, Doug Porter, and Decker Brown.
