There are some creatures God created that I often wonder why? Mice are one of those creations. To me, they have no purpose except to be an unwanted rodent.
There are those lovable cartoon character mice such as Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse but they never won me over. There is even the hero cartoon mouse, Mighty Mouse, but a mouse could never be a hero in my thinking. I never felt sorry for the children’s song characters, Three Blind Mice, and I approved of their demise. There is even a computer “mouse” but I never could figure out why.
Living on a farm, mice are something that should be gotten rid of. They eat up feed and seed. They are in grain bins, feed sheds, barns, garages and reside in stored farm vehicles and machinery causing damage. The mice cause unwanted scents, leave their messes behind and chew holes to gain access. Live traps and sticky traps can be used but we go for no mercy. We use the old tried and true traps or poisons, and we keep farm cats to keep the mouse count down. Mice can even get inside camper trailers and cause a mess. After fall harvest, the field mice make a run for cover and usually end up somewhere on the farmstead. The gestation of a mouse is 20 days, with a life span of more than a year. If not kept under control, they can end up in the house. This is not sanitary.
If I had been Mrs. Noah as the creatures and animals were loaded into the ark, two by two, I would have advised to leave off the snakes and certainly the mice.
I wrote a poem dealing with my experience with having a mouse in my house.
Look out there is a mouse in my house.
There is no pity for the little louse.
I scream and manage to throw a shoe,
but he scurried away and where he went I hadn’t a clue.
A trap is set with peanut butter as bait,
then it was bedtime and time to wait.
In the morning the scoundrel was caught.
Not wanting to touch it, a way out was sought.
Heavy gloves were worn and the dead intruder headed for the door.
He was thrown outside, never to be seen anymore.
