I don’t know where to start. It’s been a tough week. Two of my friends are sick and were hospitalized, the pick-up broke down, and I hit a deer. On top of all that, I haven’t been feeling tippy-top. No worries, I’m not contagious or anything, just my usual health issues. I’ll be back to my good ol’ snarky, sarcastic self in a day or two.
My mom had surgery on Friday to remove the plate from her knee. About five years ago, she fell and broke her knee. The added hardware was causing discomfort and keeping her from using the leg normally. That meant I had the pleasure of spending the day with her service dog, Dot. Mom had hoped the two of us could hang out in Superior while she was having her procedure. There is not much to do in Superior for a cranky crazy lady and her mom’s dog. Mom had a small list of things she needed at the store. The two of us visited Dollar General. I bet we were a sight! Dot has a cone on her head to keep her from attacking the ouchies on her back legs. The cone impairs her vision, so she moves her head from side to side as she walks. I am shocked we didn’t knock everything off of the shelves.
The surgery was later in the afternoon, and so by the time Mom was released to come home, it was dark. I knew I should’ve driven my car, but mom doesn’t like my car, so away in her van, we went. Her headlights suck, and as I commented on that fact, my drugged-up mother said, “I know that’s why I don’t drive it at night.” I’m sure you can imagine the face I was making at this point. If my mouth doesn’t say it, which doesn’t happen often, my face will. As you can imagine, I drove pretty slowly on the way home, angering many a driver on the highway.
We were within three to four miles of home when I found myself surrounded by six to eight deer. I didn’t take the time to do a head count. At least the brakes work! I’m not sure how but we managed to miss out on hitting the entire lot of them and only bumped one on the hindquarter real good. It was a good deal Mom and Dot were buckled in nice and tight because everything that wasn’t tied down was at my feet.
I’ve been doing a lot of walking across the street this weekend to check in on Mom, and even taking dinner over. Dot has figured out she can scoop snow into that silly cone and throw it at me. She thought she was pretty smart until I threw it back at her. She didn’t like that! LOL! Mom’s doing good; still, a bit doped up but doing well.
Our little truck has been giving us trouble for a while now, and we knew it was just a matter of time before she gave up. I was just hoping to have a few more things moved before she did. A friend helped George tow her back to the house, and Dad loaned us his truck so we could at least get the last bed home before the two youngest come to visit this weekend. We haven’t had any major car issues for a while now, and believe me; this is a treat! (Ah, there’s that sarcasm, I must be getting better!)
As for my friends, one is home and doing better. The other has been in the hospital for a week. There is talk of him being moved to Hastings or Omaha. That’s all I can say without violating HIPPA and my friend’s right to tell his own story, but his wife has been a good friend of mine for a long time, so please pray for him and his family. X’s & O’s.
