Presenting Biblical answers to tough questions.

Q: Does the pandemic mean we are in the end times?

A:  Nope; it actually means the exact opposite! The reason I can state this with such confidence is because Christ offered His disciples a clear explanation of world events leading up to the end times so we are not shaken or frightened without cause. This explanation is found in Matthew 24:4-16. In this passage Christ describes various world events that might shake or concern His disciples. These include the rise of false messiahs (v. 5), wars (v. 6), famines, pestilences (i.e., pandemics like COVID-19), and various earthquakes (v. 7), persecution (v. 9), divisions within the church (v. 10), false prophets and false religions (v. 11), and increased lawlessness (v. 12). Today’s headlines are filled with all of these occurrences, yet Christ clearly instructs His disciples not to be concerned about these things; they are not indications we are in the end times (vv. 4, 6 and 8).

This passage also gives us some signs to watch for that are indications of the end times. The first is the preaching of the gospel to all the nations (v. 14). The other indication of the end times Christ mentions is “the abomination of desolation spoken of by the prophet Daniel.” You can read about this in Daniel 11:29-35; where we are told of someone defiling the temple of God in Jerusalem, and exalting himself as God. Jesus states this is an indication that God’s people should flee as the time of trouble has come (vv. 15-22).

While we do not know everything the future holds, believers are able to face the problems of today with peace and confidence. God demonstrates in His word He knows the end from the beginning and nothing takes Him by surprise. A knowledge of God’s word helps us know where we are on God’s timetable and rest in confidence that He has it all under control!
