SHS bowling team readies for season

This will be the second season for the Superior High School bowling team. If numbers are any indication, this will be one popular sport.

Nelsen Petersen is in his first year of coaching the team which had a boys only team last season. This year there are 11 girls vying for spots on the girls team and six boys.

Petersen sees a lot of competitive fire burning in the girls. Many of the aspirants have either never bowled or only bowled recreationally. They are transferring their competitive spirit from other sports to bowling. Petersen has been working with both teams on basics including scoring, technique and etiquette.

The teams open their season with a match against Arapahoe on the road.

The team has dual matches scheduled on a home and away basis with Arapahoe and Southern Valley.

The highlights of the season will be two major tournaments, one on Dec. 15 in Hastings. The other will be in Grand Island in January. Both events will feature a number of Class A teams.

Members of the girls team are Kya Hodges and Katharina Engelhardt who are both seniors. Brooklynn Grabast, Atlee Kobza and Sadie Rempel are the junior class members. Cayce Barry, Kyalin Fullerton, Sophia Fullerton, Alicia Temes and Nevaeh Wilhelms are the sophomore class members. Jada Hemion is the lone freshman on the team.

Devon Field, Brent Kussman and Clayton Morris are the senior members of the boys team. Noah Butler and James Love are juniors. Sam Brockhurst is the sole freshman on the team.
