The Jewell County Commissioners, Steve Greene, Keith Roe and Brent Beck met Nov. 8 as the Board of County Canvassers. The meeting was opened to canvass the ballots from the Nov. 2, General Election. Carla J. Waugh, Jewell County clerk-election officer, was also present.
She reviewed the election night tabulation and the advance ballot count that was received after election night. The 13 provisional ballots and the reason for being provisional were reviewed. She went over the guidelines in the Kansas Election Standards Chapter 3 that provides guidelines for each situation and whether the ballot should be counted. The commissioners agreed that 10 provisional ballots should be counted and three deemed invalid for counting. The board opened and counted the 10 provisional ballots. The board tallied the votes and Carla Waugh recorded the votes in the official abstract. A 10-way tie for the Esbon City second council member position was decided by lot with drawing a name from a hat. The board chairman drew Patrick Gurka for the Esbon City Council position.
The canvassing was completed, and the board adjourned at 8:45 a.m.
