John Edward Guilkey, the son of Edward and Garnet (Nicholls) Guilkey was born on Aug. 5, 1933, in Kenesaw. He died Friday, Oct. 29, 2021, at the Brodstone Memorial Hospital at Superior at the age of 88 years, 2 months, 24 days.
John graduated from Kenesaw High School with the Class of 1952. He served in the 439th Engineers Battalion in the United States Army during the Korean War from 1953 to 1954. He was united in marriage to Elaine Smith at Minden. To this union five children were born: Linda, Deborah, Jeffrey, Jennifer and James. After the service, he was employed by Capital Steel Western Electric until 1957 in Lincoln and then the Lincoln Telephone and Telegraph Company in Hastings until 1960 when he was transferred to Superior. He retired in January of 1994.
John enjoyed woodworking, camping, fishing, gardening and trapping. He was a member of the American Legion, the Nuckolls County Historical Society Museum, the United Methodist Church and the Republican Valley Sodbusters. John and Elaine visited all 50 states, many during summer vacations with their children. Much of their travel was done with their camper, including a 41-day caravan trip to Alaska and several winters in Alamo, Texas. Bus tours were also part of their travel adventures in retirement.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters and brothers-in-law, Margretta and Clairmont Clark and Joyce and Ernest Bittfield.
Left to mourn his passing is his wife, Elaine, of 65 years; children: Linda Fasse and friend, Terry Johnson, of Omaha, Debbie Guilkey of Broomfield, Colo., Jeff Gulkey and wife, Sue, of Superior, Jennifer Jantzi and husband, Rod, of Shelton, and James Guilkey and wife, Carol, of Salt Lake City, Utah; three grandchildren: Craig Guilkey and wife, Olivia, Melissa Santos and husband, Uriel, and Solomon Guilkey; and one great-granddaughter, Ava Jean Guilkey; and his grand-dog, Millie; along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
His funeral will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, Nov. 8, from the Megrue-Price Funeral Home in Superior with Pastor Natalie Faust officiating.
Music will be a solo of "Hymn of Promise" by Carol Butler-Guilkey and a piano solo of Beethoven's "Sonatina in G" by Solomon Guilkey. A congregation hymn of "Blessed Assurance" will be sung with Carlita Price as organist and accompanist.
Visitation will be held Nov. 7, from 4 to 8 p.m. with the family present to greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m.
Pallbearers will be Craig Guilkey, Jim Smith, Phil Dean, Paul Hutchinson, Steve Gunn and Bill Hamilton. Honorary bearers will be Ward Aurand, Frank Shurigar, John Clark and Mike Bittfield.
Interment with military honors will be in the Evergreen Cemetery at Superior.
