SHS girls golf
It was quite the season for the Superior High School girls golf team. From their first match to Tuesday’s final round at the state championship at Columbus, the team set and met the highest of expectations. The girls golf program had been moribund for several years. At the urging of three golfers who competed with the boys team last spring, Kirk Utecht agreed to coach the team. However there were caveats attached. The team members were required to practice.
Five of the team members, Neah and Nadia McMeen, Lauren Tietjen, Haley Blackstone and Emma Henderson were members of the 2020 volleyball team who opted to pursue golf this fall season. They were no strangers to the state volleyball tournament. They went to state again this year, just in a different sport.
They took it upon themselves to raise funds for needed equipment. They raised enough funds for new uniforms, bags and bag carts as well as other needed equipment.
From their first match, they showed their dedication and work ethic. With each match the team improved its scores and finishes.
By the time the district matches rolled around, the team believed they were capable of earning a trip to the state match. They were right. They finished third in their district match and earned a trip to state.
It was the first trip to the state match in 13 years for a Superior golf team. While they didn’t bring home any medals, they proved their season was no fluke. They finished 12th in the 15 team field. The big factor was they improved their team score by 10 strokes on the second and final day of play.
The future appears bright as Emma Henderson is the lone senior who will be lost to graduation.
Neah and Nadia McMeen will return as will Rayne Biltoft, Haley Blackstone, Parker Littrell and Lauren Tietjen. Coach Kirk Utecht couldn’t say enough about his experience working with the team and their astonishing season .
The bar is set high for next season and this group will be ready and willing to clear it.
