SHS girls golf wraps up season at state tourney Tuesday

The Superior High School girls golf team completed their first season of competition in several years with a trip to the state Class C tournament played over the Elks Country Club course at Columbus Monday and Tuesday.

The Wildcats qualified for the state tournament with their third place finish at the District C-1 match played over the Hidden Valley Golf Course at Lincoln, last Tuesday. Superior teed off against teams from Lincoln, Lutheran, Lincoln Christian, Auburn, Tri County, Central City, Heartland, Elmwood-Murdock, Exeter-Milligan, Palmyra, Johnson County Central, Syracuse, Fairbury and Humboldt-Table Rock-Steinauer.

Superior finished in third place with a team score of 417. The four lowest individual scores comprise the team score.

Rayne Biltoft, a freshman, led Superior with her round of 96. She took seventh place in the individual standings. Emma Henderson, the lone senior on the squad, was in eighth place with a round of 100. Haley Blackstone, a junior, toured the course with a 108. Neah McMeen, a junior, handed in a 113 on her score card. Nadia McMeen, a sophomore, carded a round of 136.

The finish earned the team one of the 15 berths at the state event. Individual golfers from schools whose teams did not qualify, earned their way to Columbus with top-10 individual finishes. There were a total of 92 golfers touring the Elks Country Club course Monday and Tuesday.

Other schools competing at the tournament are Columbus Scotus, Broken Bow, Lincoln Lutheran, Mitchell, Valentine, West Point-Beemer, Cozad, Lincoln Christian, Grand Island Central Catholic, O’Neill, Laurel-Concord-Coleridge, Fullerton, Archbishop Bergan and Creek Valley.

The course was playing fast. The greens were not holding approach shots. The green were slicker than normal. The course set up demanded accurate shot making.

Superior completed the first 18-holes of competition Monday in 11th place in the 15 team field. Haley Blacktone turned in a round of 102. Emma Henderson finished with a score of 105. Rayne Biltoft handed in her score card with a 111. Neah McMeen was done with a round of 118. Nadia McMeen finished her round in 145. .

Emma Henderson recorded a round of 101 on Tuesday for a two-day total of 206. Haley Blackstone recorded a round of 106 Tuesday for a match total of 208. Rayne Biltoft posted a round of 106 for the Tuesday match with a two-day total of 217. Neah McMeen was in with a round of 110 Tuesday for a match total of 225. Nadia McMeen finished Tuesday with a round of 135, a 10 stroke improvement over her Monday round. Her two-day total was 280.

The team placed 12th in the 15 team field. The four lowest individual scores are used to arrive at the team total. The team total for day one was 433. The day two team total was 422.

Kirk Utecht, coach, and his team, had every reason to proud of their showing. In their first year of playing they qualified for the state tournament, a momentous achievement for any school. With only Emma Henderson leaving because of graduation, the team will set their expectations higher for nest season and justifiably so. Well done, team. Well done indeed.
