Betty Lee May, the daughter of Roy and Etta (Cammel) Crouch, was born on Aug. 19, 1929, near Mankato, Kan. She died Oct. 8, at the Jewell County Hospital at Mankato at the age of 92 years, 1 months, 19 days.
Betty attended country school near Mankato and went to Jewell and Mankato high schools. She was a member of the Mankato Christian Church. On Sept. 13, 1945, she was united in marriage to Harold May and to this union was born six children.
Betty milked cows. She started helping her father, Roy, at seven years of age and retired from milking in 2000. She helped her husband, Harold, with the farming and ranching. She enjoyed many days and evenings with family, neighbors and friends at the Lovewell Lake with time spent boating and enjoying lots of good food and campfires after dark. She loved to cook and bake pies for her family, friends and the hired help. She raised chickens - plenty of chickens -for eating and farm fresh eggs.
Later in life she and her soulmate, Dick, enjoyed going to the races and evenings and days cruising in one of three different Corvettes along with being a member of the Pleasure Cruisers car club.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harold; sons, Roy and Billie; daughter, Janie Hall; sisters, Jean Boettcher and JoAnn Badger; brother, Raymond Crouch: and grandson, Hayden May.
She is survived by her children, Doug May and wife, Mary of Mount Hope, Kan .; Martina May of Salina, Kan .; and Susan Winslow and husband, Ken of Burr Oak; her soulmate, Dick Schwieger of Superior; 24 grandchildren: Troy (Billie) May, Travis (Debra) May, Trisha May, Robin Jehorek Dustin May, Jessie Ost, Jennifer Cashman, Chad (Christina) Lehrling, Trent Lehrling, Jenna (Joe) Forsberg, Chance Morris, Lance (Bob Lynch) Winslow, Landon (Kayla) Winslow, Austin Winslow, Caleb Hall, Augustus (Carrie) May, and Caitlyn May; 32 great-grandchildren: Jeremiah (Amanda) May, Jesse and Jonah May, Brittany (Nathan) Poquette, Jessica and Anthony Cisnero, Madison (Jon) Strohl, Maggie Jehorek, Megan (Dakota) Higer, Colton May, Stevie (Quinten) Schafer, Nora May, Bethany (Taylor) Hawes, Paige, Brianna, Leah, Sara, Jacob Lehrling, Vivian Walle, Walker and Scarlet Forsberg, Paiton, Lilah and Cooper Winslow, Celeigh and Jackson Winslow; three great-great- grandchildren: Landon May and Teddy Poquette and Ivy Strohl; her sister, Linda Ziegler of Mankato; nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
Her funeral will be held at 2 p.m. , Friday, Oct. 15, from the Megrue-Price Funeral Home in Superior with Matt Ehlers officiating.
Book signing will be held today (Thursday) from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Honorary pallbearers are Betty's grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Inurnment will be in the Mount Hope Cemetery, Mankato.
Memorials are suggested to go to Jewell County Food Pantry or the American Cancer Society.
