Presenting Biblical answers to tough questions

Q: Is it sinful to have doubts or questions about God? If so, how can I get rid of them?

A:  It is not sinful to have doubts or questions about God. There are far too many examples in Scripture of godly believers sharing their struggles with God and other mature believers to think that. Some examples include a man named Asaph who felt that God was being unfair in allowing evil people to prosper (Ps. 73), as well as the prophet Habakkuk who decided he was going to sit on a watchtower until God answered his questions about evil (Habakkuk 2:1). We can also see from Christ’s life that he welcomed questions and gave truth to those who sought it (see Matthew 18:21-22; John 14:5-6, 22-23 for just a few examples).

God is very aware our imperfect knowledge of Him will sometimes cause us to face situations or problems we find confusing or a struggle (Ps. 103:11, 13). He has provided us with several tools to help resolve our doubts and questions. Namely: the Holy Spirit (John 16:13), the Bible (Ps. 119:105), and pastors and teachers in the Church (Eph. 4:11-12).

However, I would like to offer the following guidelines when it comes to seeking the answers to our doubts or questions. First, we must remember an infinite God is not accountable to finite man (Isaiah 55:8-9). We cannot hold God to our wrong standards or demand He conform to our worldly perspectives. We must also remember to be both patient and persistent when pursuing truth since we may not find an answer right away. Sometimes God’s people have to wait years to discover answers to our questions. There are some questions we will not know answers to on this side of heaven. The question we must ask ourselves is, “Has God answered enough of my questions for me to give him the benefit of the doubt on things I don’t yet understand?
