Byron 4-H member makes Quilt of Valor for Friend

Wenske Repair celebrates their 20th anniversary

Saturday was a day of remembrance and expression of thanks to all military, veterans, first responders, fire departments, police, medical professionals and others who serve our country. Many of which are volunteers in our rural communities.

Also, the night brought a special event in Byron, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Wenske Repair, LLC. The business started on Sept. 10, 2001. It was an appreciation supper for their customers - with a special "Guest of Honor" - veteran Joe Rossi. Mr. Rossi was honored for his service to our country by awarding him a Quilt of Valor. Rounds of applause from the audience thanked Joe and other veterans, first responders, fire department volunteers, medical professionals and police.

The Wenske's daughter, Klarissa, is a 4-H member. She made Joe's Quilt of Valor which was quilted by Cindy Bartels. Klarissa and her brother, Kash, wrapped their friend with his Quilt of Valor. Joe began his military career from his home state of New York when he entered the Army and was sent to Vietnam. He said a family member who had experienced World War II, suggested to him he should head to Canada where other young men were going. Joe said, "I just could not do that!" He entered the military during the height of the Vietnam War. He said he was trained to be a radio operator, and when he arrived in Vietnam, they handed him a gun and told him to get going.

During the night's festivities, former Wenske employee, Josh Bowman of Geneva, told the audience about Joe's military service. Josh also worked for Wenske Repair, LLC from 2016 until February 2020 when he became full-time in the National Guard. Earlier too, Josh received his Quilt of Valor from his relative Janelle Bruning.
