Phil Hansen

Phil Laverne Hansen, 83, died Friday, at the Webster County Community Hospital in Red Cloud. He was born Nov. 7, 1937, to Ted and Maude (Duval) Hansen at the family home in rural Webster County. He was the second born to a set of twins and the youngest of five.

Phil was active in 4-H, showing calves at the county fair that were raised on his dad’s farm. He was involved in the junior and senior plays,football and learned to play the cornet in 5th grade. When he was in 6th grade, he marched with the high school band at the Nebraska State Fair. He was in the school band and was involved with the cornet

trio and quartet, also participated in chorus. Phil was secretary of F.F.A., attended Ag Contest, he was on the annual staff, Kearney Scholastic Contest and represented his school in history, sophomore class vice-president, junior class treasurer and senior class president.

After graduating high school, he went to the University of Nebraska for one year. He returned home to help his father on the family farm west of Red Cloud. On Nov. 27, 1957, he was united in marriage with Marlene Grewell. This union was blessed with two children, Terry and Deb.

Phil lived all his life in the Webster County area farming and raising cattle. He enjoyed taking his grandchildren to numerous cattle shows which covered six states. Phil was one of the co-founders for the Webster County Feed Yard north of Red Cloud. He also was a co-founder and operator of the HKZ Silage crew.

After retiring he took up welding as a hobby, making many crafts for family and friends. He enjoyed attending the county fair with two of his great-granddaughters showing cattle.

Phil was part of the Jaycees and the Sheriff’s Posse. He was a long time and active member of the Red Cloud United Methodist Church. He was a dedicated member of the Red Cloud Lions Club and served as a board member and president of the co-op in Red Cloud around 30 years.

Preceding him in death were his parents; brothers, Elton and Wayne; and sisters, Mae and Phyllis.

Survivors include his wife, Marlene; children and spouses, Terry Hansen; Mrs. Jack (Deb) McGuire; grandchildren and their spouses.

His funeral is at 11 a.m., Friday, at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Dale Thiele and Pastor Laura Fricker officiating.

Interment will be in the Red Cloud Cemetery.
