The Jewell City Council met in regular session Monday, Aug. 2, at City Hall. Those in attendance were Mayor Darrell Bohnert; council members, Max Burks, Josh Burks, Bob Freeman, Gaye Daniels, Derek Birdsell and Kristie Anderson, city clerk.
Don Jacobs, Jewell County sheriff, talked with the council about the dog problems in town. Shelby Bohnert, Jewell County Land Bank, was present to discuss about the meeting she attended for the Jewell County Land Bank and went into depth on how this could benefit the City of Jewell.
James Reed, code enforcement officer, provided a written report of activities. He continues to work with property owners to abate nuisances.
Kristie Anderson presented the monthly clerk’s report. Anderson gave a court update. Court was moved to 7 p.m., Aug. 5. She updated the council on the community center and motel reservation schedule. Anderson said the City of Jewell received money from American Recovery Plan Act (ARPA) Covid-Relief Fund.
David Knappert was absent, but presented a written maintenance report. He is working on repairing the streets. He discussed locating sewer manholes in the future.
Mayor Bohnert gave an update on the Lake Emerson dredging project and the finishing touches. The council reviewed and discussed the land bank information. It was approved to write an ordinance to establish a land bank for the City of Jewell.
In other business, Anderson presented two building permits to the council.Building permits were approved for Pat Zentz and Nathanial Blair.
It was recommended to replace the microwave in the community center with a ventless microwave. Daniels said there is $257 in the grant money and the microwave cost is more than $300. It was approved to purchase the vent- less microwave and take $100 out of the community center fund to pay for the microwave.
