Richard Schmeling was guest speaker at NCHS meeting

The Nuckolls County Historical Society held its annual meeting and program on the afternoon of June 27, in Pioneer Hall, Superior. Eleven board members and 30 guests attended the event. In addition to the program, 16 visitors toured the facilities.

Richard Schmeling was the guest speaker. Mr. Schmeling shared his knowledge of the Nuckolls County railroads. At the end of his presentation, Schmeling donated a railroad station schedule board to the museum. This railroad board was part of the Superior train system.

During the business portion of the meeting, co-chairs, Steve Renz and Fred Meyers, shared updated information about the museum from 2019 to 2021. The current 3-year board members are 2019-2022 term: Kelly Bouray, Alfred Hansen, Esther Martin and Ron Schott; 2020-2023 term: Dave Healey, Lorri Meyer, Nancy Meyers, Janice Fullerton and Steve Renz; 2021-2024 term: Dave Frey, Camie Kroeger, Fred Meyers, Marty Pohlman and Rob Williams.

The co-chairs thanked past board members, Darlene Peterson, Jean Keifer, Kelly Schroer and Loetta Pedersen, for their service on the board and the preservation of Nuckolls County history at the museum. Special thank you was given to Esther Martin and her daughters, Cindy and Cathy, for assembling their exhibit on the Martin Honey Acre display. Other acknowledgements were given to Derek Kirchhoff who implemented the preservation of the Louden log cabin and post office as an Eagle Scout service project. Jon Vanderford, director and video photographer of channel 10/11 “Pure Nebraska,” provided statewide coverage of the Nuckolls County Museum.

Two Rural Fellowship interns working for the Superior Economic Development, Kendra Vaughn and Jane Itetere, were introduced as they are working along with the historical society.

The new handicapped accessible north exit door was available to obtain access to outer buildings. A light filtering print screening was applied to the museum’s entrance. New coating of exterior painting was completed to the church, schoolhouse and outer buildings. With the help of board members a new updated website was developed along with a Facebook page.

After the meeting and program, everyone was invited for tea, lemonade and cookies. The next NCHS annual meeting will be in March 2022. The museum hours are Sunday 1 to 5p.m. and Monday 9a.m. to 4 p.m. with other days by appointment.
