Dorothy Mattison

Dorothy Elizabeth Amack Mattison, 97, was born June 1, 1924, to Luella and Lloyd Amack in Garfield precinct south of Red Cloud. She died June 14, at Heritage Care Center in Red Cloud.

She was a lifelong resident of Webster County. In February of 1943 she was united in marriage to Dallas Mattison, who preceded her in death. To this union two daughters were born: Doreen Greenhalgh and Deanna Adams. Dorothy is also survived by two grandchildren: Lisa Knapp and Lanny Greenhalgh; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, and sisters, Evelyn Davis and Lela Hartman.

Dallas and Dorothy raised their daughters on a livestock and crop farm

south of Guide Rock. Granddaughter Lisa has many fond memories of summers with Grandpa and Grandma on the farm, riding her pony, milking cows, gathering eggs, playing with baby pigs, looking for kittens in the hay mow and Tuesday trips to Red Cloud for groceries, a visit to the library and the livestock auction.

Dorothy was generous with her time, and she devoted her life to serving others. She volunteered for many organizations in the community including the hosptial in Red Cloud, the United Methodist Church, the Webster County Historical Museum and for many years the Willa Cather Foundation, where she became the local expert on Willa Cather. After the state historical society took over the Willa Cather Foundation, Dorothy found herself to be an employee rather than a volunteer. She retired in 2011 after 53 years of service to the foundation.

Dorothy was an avid reader, enjoyed work-search and crossword-puzzles, and played card games. She was skilled at knitting, embroidery and quilting. Dorothy was a devoted Bible student and taught adult Sunday school for 28 years at the Methodist Church.

Her funeral was Friday at the Williams Funeral Home Chapel in Red Cloud. Pastor Bonnie McCord officiated. Burial was in the Red Cloud cemetery.
