Hollis Lee Grone, 96, of Davenport, the son of Harold and Bertha (Houseman) Grone, was born Nov. 3, 1924, on a farm near Davenport. He died Tuesday, June 8, at Fillmore County Hospital in Geneva.
Hollis grew up north of Davenport. He never quit farming. Even when he started as a tax consultant and starting his own business, he said he was a farmer that did taxes.
Hollis attended country school and graduated from Davenport High School with the Class of 1942. He was united in marriage to Nelva Bartling on June 30, 1951, at Bethel Church of the Brethren in Carleton. To this union five children were born: Dianne, Holly, Marti, Garry and Gina. The family made their home in Davenport. In the 1970s, while farming, he went to work for H&R Block in Hastings and in Sutton before starting Hollis Grone Tax Service in 1976. He enjoyed working on income tax and continued his school in the tax business, keeping up on all the new rules.
Hollis was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Nelva; and brother Harley and wife Joanne.
He is survived by son, Garry of Davenport; daughters, Dianne Craig of Ocean, N.J., Holly Schoming of Davenport, Marti Alfs of Shickley, and Gina Grone of Fairbury; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and sister, Bea Behnkeof Lyons, Kan.
His funeral was Saturday, at The United Methodist Church in Davenport. Pastor Mike Row officiated. Burial was in the Davenport Cemetery.
