SHS grad has lofty ambitions

Hallie Miller has her eyes set firmly in the sky. The 2020 Superior High School graduate has completed her first year at Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana. She is working on a bachelors degree majoring in professional flight technology. Miller is seeking to pursue a career in education. In addition to her aviation related course work she has earned her private pilots license. She is coherently working toward her commercial certificate which will allow her to fly paying passengers.

Her courses range from aviation business, precalculus and trigonometry to large aircraft systems. Critical thinking courses are part of the core curriculum. Upon completion of her degree, Miller will hold commercial single and multi-engine land certificates, an instrument rating as well as the certified flight instructor certificate. She will also have a R-ATP. This designation allows her to obtain an airline transport pilot certificate with 1,000 hours of flight time as opposed to 1,500 hours for those not attending certified schools. The ATP allows pilots to fly for regional and major airlines.

Hallie if the daughter of Andrew and Kristin Miller, Hardy. She has three younger siblings. Dane and Brett attend Superior High School while Declan is a Superior Middle School student.

Miller is an avid athlete. While attending Superior High School she participating in cross country, basketball and track.

Although her father has been a military fighter pilot, this was not what piqued her interest in flying for a career. A Christmas gift of a Discovery Flight opened her eyes to a different world. Discovery Flights are offered by local flight schools and instructors as a way of allowing prospective fliers to experience the feeling of flight. Miller was hooked after her first flight. She realized she could and would make a career in aviation. Fred Meyers was the local flight instructor who conducted her first flight.

She explored the many options available for flight training. Purdue checked all the boxes as to what she sought in an aviation career. She applied and was accepted.

Mill said she is "loving it." She has plans to accumulate flight time this summer while working two jobs.

Miller looks forward to earning her commercial certificate in her second year. She would encourage any student to consider a career in aviation. The large number of mandatory retirements at major airlines over the next several years offer opportunities in the passenger and freight fields that are unprecedented.

Miller has liked every moment of flight time and eagerly anticipates the next steps of her career path.
