Verlen Leroy Marquart, 82, of Chester, the son of Elmer and Gertrude (Duensing) Marquart, was born Aug. 13, 1938 in Hebron. He died May 18,at Parkview Haven Nursing Home in Deshler.
Verlen grew up on the farm helping his father with the livestock and farming. He attended country school through the eighth grade.
He entered the United States Army Reserves Aug. 19, 1961, and was honorably discharged June 20, 1967.
Verlen married Janice Kasparek Aug. 26, 1962, at Peace Lutheran Church in Deshler by Pastor E.F. Janssen. This union was blessed with the
birth of five children.
Verlen enjoyed farming, raising cattle, hogs, sheep and nature. In his spare time, he liked going to sales, scrapping iron and saving what he could use. Time with his family, especially the grandchildren, was always on the top of his list.
He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Deshler, and the Deshler American Legion Post.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one infant daughter, Valerie Sue, and a sister, Shirley Cline.
He is survived by his wife, Janice of Chester; sons, Jeffrey Marquart of Pleasanton, and Jon Marquart of Byron; daughters; Terri Williams of Belleville, and Patricia Grove of Lincoln, Neb.; brother, Delmar Marquart of Deshler, sister, Arlene Sorge of Waverly; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and friends.
His funeral was held Saturday, May 22, at Peace Lutheran Church in Deshler. Officiant was Pastor Joe Love. Burial was in Peace Lutheran Church cemetery. Military honors were by Thayer County American Legion Posts.
Kroll Funeral Home of Deshler, was in charge of arrangements.
