Memorial Day programs held at area cemeteries

Monday's cloudy sky and cool temperature did not keep a sizeable contingent of area residents from attending the annual Memorial Day ceremony at Superior's east and west Evergreen Cemeteries honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their country.

There was no sound system available at the east cemetery. Presenters relied on their normal speaking voices.

Gale Mikkelsen served as the master of ceremonies. Robert Hopkins, pastor of Centennial Lutheran Church, Superior, offered the opening prayer.

Grady Henderson, a Superior High school student, recited Abraham Lincoln's "Gettysburg Address. Hopkins presented the memorial address.

Tributes were read and floral arrangements placed in memory and gratitude to those who gave their lives in different conflicts of the United States.

Judy Meyers paid homage to the Revolutionary War soldiers who gave their lives to ensure the formation of our nation.

Becky Caldwell paid tribute to those who gave their lives to preserve the union during the Civil war.

Kendra Lipker read the tribute to the soldiers of the Spanish-American War.

Carol Thompson honored those lost in the First and Second World Wars.

Maxine Rempe presented the tribute to those lost in all of the conflicts of our nation since its inception.

Each of the presenters laid a floral wreath at the base of the unknown soldier monument.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars firing squad fired three volleys. John Price, Jr. played Taps.

The National Anthem was sung by Kelsea Blevins.

Mikkelsen then directed the attendees to cross over to the west cemetery.

Hopkins presented the Memorial Prayer at the west cemetery.

Thompson again presented the tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice in World Wars One and Two.

Meyer honored the dead of the Korean War.

Lipker gave the remembrance for those who died in the Vietnam War.

Rempe reprised her tribute to those who paid the ultimate price in all wars.

Caldwell paid tribute to those who perished in recent conflicts while serving their nation.

The color guard fired three volleys. Price played 'Taps' and the ceremony concluded for another year.
